Visitors

Willy and Deanna enjoy having visitors!  Family, friends from High School, Navy days, and Power Plant days visited them.  Willy’s Engineering students often bring their families.

Surf-Jitsu

Willy is still on his surfing streak.  No missed days unless he was off island.  New Years Day was day number 849!  The McCoy’s bought a shirt for Willy to celebrate day 604. Every Saturday people come to surf from 7am to 9am.  If they are brand new Willy will teach them.  It is best in the morning when there is no wind.  Willy went to a surf competition to watch his friend Katie.  When the contest staff found out about his surf days record, they announced it, and gave him a set of $100 fins!  Katie convinced Willy to try the artificial wave at Wai Kai.  Every Saturday Willy also teaches Jiu-Jitsu after surfing until lunchtime.  Willy is very proud of the progress and capabilities of his Jiu-Jitsu students.

Boating & Fishing

There was ugly news for Willy’s Boating and Fishing adventures this year when the community’s Marina was shut down. and all the boat owners were directed to remove their boats.  This was because of a decision to undertake the eradication of a species of coral, which may take months or years.  This puts Willy’s boat in his carport, adding hours to every boating excursion.  Willy very much wants his Marina back.  Willy did catch fish this year, took friends whale watching, and out to the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar.  Willy caught Bonefish from shore in the neighborhood thanks to pastor Calvin.  A few times, Willy also went out paddling in the outrigger canoes with a canoe club. The canoes are launched 200 yards down the beach from his home.

California

In January, Willy organized a work trip to the Central Coast.  Thank you very much Dennis Petersen for helping me arrange a visit to the Power Plant by my co-workers.  Being focused on the work group, Willy missed visiting all but a few people. In March Deanna snuck into California to surprise Rilee at her Sweet 16, and was able to see many longtime friends and family.

Ohio

Willy returned to central Ohio for his 48th High School Class Reunion.  Thank you, Rob and Becky for keeping him.  There was a good turnout, and the event was held on Polly’s Farm.  He enjoyed re-connecting! While in Ohio, Willy saw his Uncle Don and Aunt Eileen and his cousin Tina.  Willy also went by and visited Dave and Candy Phillips.

Georgia & Alabama

Deanna flew to Atlanta to watch the grandkids in January for Chad’s 40th birthday bash in the Smokey Mountains. In July, Willy and Deanna went to visit Chad and Jamie’s family.  The group visited Stone Mountain which is kind of a Mount Rushmore of the South.  Deanna also reconnected with her dentist and friend she worked for in Cayman.
In October, Deanna and Dorothy, Willy’s mom went to Birmingham to help Larry and Doris, Willy’s brother and sister-in-law settle into their new home in Birmingham.  Deanna drove to see Chad and family in Buford for the weekend.  They are happy that they are just a short drive from family now.

Colorado & Kansas

Willy and Deanna visited Kirk and Melanie’s family in the Denver area in July for Kirk’s 38th, Deanna’s 63rd and Hudson’s 8th birthdays.  Willy assisted in Hudson’s Jiu-Jitsu class.
Deanna also stopped to see her brother Rock and sister-in-law Vicke at their new farm in Chanute, Kansas.

Plants & Animals

Deanna has been trying her hand at gardening.  In Hawaii that means throwing plants in the ground and seeing what happens.  Her goal is to have enough for a fruit salad.  She planted Dragon Fruit, Bananas, and Papayas.  They learned a banana tree grows a foot a month, however each plant only produces one bunch of bananas.  The first bunch of bananas is pictured as well as the first papayas.  Planting the top of a pineapple will grow one but it takes 2 years for the first pineapple to mature.  Mango trees, Avocado, and Lilikoi are plentiful in the common areas of our neighborhood.  Seven Plumeria trees and three Coconut trees grow in Willy and Deanna’s yard.  Animals that can be seen from their lanai include Monk Seals, Sea Turtles, Whales, Mongoose, Geckos, and many species of Birds, including Parakeets and Chickens.  A neighborhood cat comes in to visit almost daily.

Ships

The US Navy provides a neighborhood watch service for Willy and Deanna’s community, showing a mighty presence with Nuclear Subs, and an occasional Aircraft Carrier.  Coast Guard ships and many other types go in and out of Pearl Harbor via the channel nearby.

Beautiful Hawaiian Skies

The last two pictures were taken from Sunset Beach, and the rest from Willy and Deanna’s yard. They still wake up every day and feel tremendously blessed and can’t believe that we are living in paradise. They never take it for granted and love sharing it with everyone that can visit.
