Willy Retired

Willy retired in May! Hopefully this one lasts. There was a celebratory event at Willy and Deanna’s home with food, a band (Chain Reaction) and 125 guests! The event lasted about 12 hours, from the time the sunrise surfers arrived until evening when the last visitors left. About half the guests were Willy’s co-workers, and half were from the community. Dave and Brenda Gleason came to witness it, and the big surprise was Kirk’s attendance. Deanna woke Willy up from napping, and said there was someone here that wanted to train Jiu-Jitsu. Kirk was wearing a hat and sunglasses, so when Willy came around the corner to greet him, he did not recognize him and introduced himself. Kirk explained that it was not necessary to introduce himself to his son!

Greece and Türkiye

Willy and Deanna went on a wonderful September cruise to the Greek Islands and Türkiye. Dave and Brenda Gleason joined them. They all flew in and out of Athens, where they started and ended their voyage. Before departing, Willy and Deanna stayed a couple days in Athens. Their hotels were within walking distance from the Acropolis. They visited the Greek islands of Santorini, Mykonos and Crete, and in Türkiye, they stopped at Istanbul and Bodrum.  They explored the Bodrum Castle, and visited the Egyptian Spice market in Istanbul. It was interesting to see brilliantly engineered architecture, some of which remains standing after thousands of years. Prices were low and the food was excellent. The local people were friendly and took great pride in the quality of any work they did. The Costa cruise ship passengers were mostly European, and Willy used a translation app to effectively communicate in 14 languages! Willy had the most fun he has had in years when they visited Santorini. There were three choices to get to the town up a vertical 500 feet from the dock. Cable car, walking or donkey were the choices. Well, the no-brainer choice was to take a donkey! The 10€ donkey ride was exciting and hilarious. The donkeys climbed a steep slippery cobblestone series of switchbacks. Donkeys would jockey their way up through people and other donkeys going up and down. Deanna and Willy laughed the whole way up. Parts of the ride seemed precarious when the donkey was next to the wall. The rider's feet were above the wall, and the wall was at the edge of a cliff!

Family Gatherings

Deanna and Willy went to Texas for Sophia’s Quinceanera! What a wonderful cultural event it was with a strong message of encouragement and support. Chad and Kirk’s families were there. Both of Willy’s brothers and his mom were there and much of the family was hosted by Garry and Sheri. Adam, Austin, Logan, and of course Luke and Ivette's extended families and many friends attended. Austin and Melanie came out early in the year.  Deanna and Willy visited their oldest son Chad and Jamie in Georgia a couple of times and Deanna went to Kirk and Melanie's in Colorado. Rich came to visit Dorothy and Deanna and Dorothy went to Alabama to see Larry and Dorica. Garry and Sheri came a couple times and stayed with Dorothy. It was a treat when Willy’s Aunt Kathy, and cousins Julie and Paul visited Hawaii. Julie also brought her son and daughter, Shawn and Shayla. Willy, Deanna and Dorothy enjoyed sharing time and the island with them. Willy had not seen any of them in over a decade. Willy and Dorothy also enjoyed a trip to the Big Island for part of a day to meet his late cousin Rudy's son Chris and his family, including his mom Tony.  Sean and Danielle and family visited for us for a week. Luke and Ivette brought their family for Thanksgiving week. Kirk’s family came to visit, and Hudson caught a wave and stood up on it by himself.

Surf-Jitsu

Surf-Jitsu continued this year, almost every Saturday morning. As of New Years Day Willy will be on day 1,185 of his days surfing. Congratulations to Cammie and Brenden for their promotion to Blue Belt by Willy. Kirk started training again and competed this year in Las Vegas worlds. Willy, Deanna, Jeff and Jane attended. Willy saw lots of old friends there, including Chris and Mallory. Kirk and Hudson competed in Nashville. Chad also started training again and Declan competed in Georgia. Kirk was awarded a surprise promotion to Brown Belt by the school he attends in Colorado, and his son Hudson was promoted to a Gray belt (that's a kid's only rank).  Willy and Deanna met Christopher Lord who manages a very nice restaurant at the Kahala, the Arancino. Willy trained with Chris when he lived in California. Melanie made a logo and T-shirts for Willys school.

Boating & Fishing

When Jon Helm came to visit, Willy hooked a Marlin for the first time. It jumped out of the water a couple times, but shook off the lure and got away. The boat still lives in the carport as the Marina has not re-opened. The Kaneohe Bay Sandbar has become a fun day trip destination for relaxing and beautiful mountain views with family and friends. When Willy took Luke’s family to the Sandbar they all saw Manta Rays feeding. Deanna saw dolphins and whales from our boat for the first time off the Waianae shore.  The Dolphins seem to like getting close to the boat. Turtles are everywhere. Some of visitors caught Bonefish from the neighborhood beach. Willy made 4 lures, none of which has caught a fish. Willy built a PVC pole holder for close to $50 in lieu of a $12,000.00 Marlin fighting chair.
